Askana fortress
Askana fortress. Guria Region. Ozurgeti,
village Mtispiri.
This is a place for those who admires spectacular
views, travelling through
difficult terrain and seeing ancient architectural sights.
Askana fortress (or Queen Tamar fortress ) is located on the cliff. The way to
get there is distinguished by beautiful landscape and is especially fascinating
for wildlife tourism fans. It takes about 40 minutes to get there on foot
.
The
fortress was built in 4th
century . According to the legend
a famous invader Murwan-Kru ( Kru means deaf) tried to gain the fortress by
force but he didn’t succeed .
In
good time the fortress consisted of two towers. There were military barracks
for soldiers and you can even notice embrasures cut out in the walls. It had a
secret tunnel as well. From the fortress you can see very impressive views.
Askana fortress and its surrounding
territories were inhabited in ancient times . It is proved with rich
archeological finds and the Iron Age furnace workshops ( dated I millennium
B.C) . They make evident that this region had highly developed iron and steel
industry.
The
car distance from Ozurgeti to the fortress is 17 kilometers.
The

Region Tourism Development Strategies “ and is
funded by the European Union.
