Askana fortress

Askana fortress. Guria Region.  Ozurgeti,  village Mtispiri.
This is a place for those who admires  spectacular  views,  travelling through difficult terrain and seeing ancient architectural sights.
Askana fortress (or Queen  Tamar  fortress ) is located on the cliff. The way to get there is distinguished by beautiful landscape and is especially fascinating for wildlife tourism fans. It takes about 40 minutes to get  there  on  foot .

The fortress was  built  in  4th  century . According to the legend a famous invader Murwan-Kru ( Kru means deaf) tried to gain the fortress by force but he didn’t succeed .
In good time the fortress consisted of two towers. There were military barracks for soldiers and you can even notice embrasures cut out in the walls. It had a secret tunnel as well. From the fortress you can see very impressive views.

Askana fortress and its surrounding territories were inhabited in ancient times . It is proved with rich archeological finds and the Iron Age furnace workshops ( dated I millennium B.C) . They make evident that this region had highly developed iron and steel industry.
The car distance from Ozurgeti to the fortress is 17 kilometers.
The project is implemented  within the framework of “ Participatory  Principles  for  Guria  Region   Tourism Development Strategies “   and is funded by the European Union.
